How to make a volcano

An exciting experiment took place in our chemistry laboratory! Our 5th grade pupils had been working on a volcano for two weeks and today they made it erupt. To make their volcano they used a piece of card, a plastic bottle, newspaper, some tape, some glue, kitchen paper, some paint, an aluminium tray, some baking soda, food dye and some vinegar. The reddish lava emerging through the crater is the result of a chemical reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar. In this reaction carbon dioxide gas is produced, which is also present in real volcanoes. Making a volcano is an ideal science experiment to make at home with the family on a rainy day.
